Hello all...
Well, my son is 20mths. He doesnt say many words. His main word is "Thank you". He can say it about 20 times a day. I would really like it if he can say more words. Other words he says is: dada, papa, mama, chicken & baby. Sometimes when he says those word he says them 3 times. We've sat & had real conversations with him, have him look at us when we talk to him & try to have him repeat a word. I've given him options just to get him to say a word (for exaple: If i ask him, "Do you want juice or milk?"). He will wine if he's hungry or thirsy or just throw his up. We are working wit an ECI cordinator who will bring a speech person to meet with us. But i was wondering if y'all have any ideas or suggestions of what i can do to help him???
Just keep workin with him. Face time with you is most important. The teachers will get him to talk when you can't. Solomon's teachers can get him to do things we can't. It's quite normal from what they've said. Does he like music? Sesame Street? Have him sit with you and point to and say the names of the charicters.Does he have a favorite book? When he's in a good mood try reading to him gettin him to point to the pictures and say what it is. Signing can help. The speech teacher will help you with this. He sounds like he just needs some help and he'll be talking in no time. Good luck with him. Tiffany
Yes, he loves music. He loves to dance to it no matter where he's at, lol. Sesame Street, he doesnt watch it but he's familiar with Elmo because of the toys that ive showed him. He'll sometimes watches things like Curious George, Dinosaur Train, Arthur & some other show. He does have books, but not a favorite just yet, but i do read to him. He doesn't know how to point. His way of pointing is a closed fist as if he is pointing & babbling away as if he is talking to you. I really hope the speech teacher can help him & it doesnt take long. Thanks! :)
Once he's getting help you'll start to see him try more. It won't be on your timetable trust me. Solomon doesn't have a favorite either but he loves looking at the pictures. Have you had him evaluated? The state provides early intervension services for free. They'll work with you right where you are. Call your local public health department they handle ei services in many cases. Does your area have a center that helps people with disabilities? They may also provide evaluations and teachers too. Does he get to play with other children? This can be a difficult thing for blind parents. For us it's because we have few friends and trust noone around here. We're looking in to a toddler play group that's run thru ei services. I hope all of this helps. Tiffany
We will be getting evaluated in about 2wks. The speech teacher will be coming wit the ECI coordinator. The speech had become a worry to be since he wasn't saying more mords. Plus they think it will work in a short amount of time since i've added more to our services. I had to drop some of the service due to mourning the loss of my dad & everything becoming overwhelming to me. But now we should be good on getting the services we need for my son. He doesn't play with many kids. He's mainly played with his cousins, but we don't go visit no more. His dad's sister brings her kids sometimes but he likes to fight with them. He just started to play with a lil boy & his sister, but no other kids. I really rather not let him play with the kids at our apt complex because the kids here are bad, talk dirty & cus alot. I don't want him being around them & them influencing my son on their behavior & language. But i've tried asking for play groups for my son, but they kinda stalling with that so im doing some research on that. It would help if he had that because he loves playing with some kids & sometimes he tries to talk to them.
It sounds like your doing your best. We've had similar issues with kids around here. Also not finding much of anything in our area for playgroups. We've started taking him to a friends house to play with another little boy. They do well together. We're moving soon as well so our services co is helping with research on programs. I hope the eval went well. Tiffany
My daughter does the same thing.
But she talks when she feel like it.
Does your sun talk when he wants?
My daughter does.
They say that if your child doesn't say 100 words by 2 years old that they need to see a speech therapist.
I think it is a good idea cause it sound like you are trying as had as you can.
So far my son has met with his speech therapist. We mainly talked bout how things have been going & words he says. We have also put together some goals i would like for him to accomplish. He has been mimiciking things ppl say. He says words that you expect him to say when he wants such as please & your welcome. He will walk around saying "bi*ch", that is partly my fault because he watches the Simpsons with me, but we dont use it in our home. Seems like i have to be careful what i say around him because he listen when i dont think he is. It can be from something nice like when i say bye to someone or something that i say when reacting like "Ouch!" or "Oh sh*t". But the speech therapist says is a good thing he mimicks us. For x-mas i bought him a Tag Junior learning toy. I like it cause he can learn new word, read & learn different stuff while having fun. So we're trying to get him more interested in the book more than him playing with the object that talks & reads the stuff out. I feel like he is improving even though we really havent done much with his speech teacher :)
